Collage

Started collecting newspapers for the last couple of weeks. I also went through my "to do recycling" where I "salvaged" some stuff, which hopefully might be useful.

Just about to start going through the newspapers and cut out "potential interesting bits" I also need to re-read the list of words to make sure I understand them properly.

I am looking through example of collage made by artists.
This one is by Michelle Caplan (A Mixed Media Collage Artist), she created it for a client who wanted a piece which would remind her of Mina Loy (a poet) whom she admires a lot.
I like how she integrated text within the picture. It is a good piece of work, although pertsonally I find it a bit dark (visually).

This one also I quite like, it seems at first that he has put the globe on her head without giving it any further thoughts, but in fact you can see that by having it positioned this way it enables the viewer to "see" her face and hairstyle. 25 November 2009...still going at it. At first, I was just going through papers and magazines, save them up, go through some more newspapers (or magazines...or just random stuff) then save them (again!) then finally started sticking things down. I'm afraid that was lenghty and (tidious...sorry!). One of the drawbacks of this method is even though I had some ideas or "concepts" popping up to my head, by the time I'd actually gone round to sticking them, those ideas had well and truly disappeared. Not to mention the fact that bits I cut occasionally (quite often actually) would go missing or I'd eventually dismiss them.

At first, I "arranged" the cuttings by theme (text, images, objects, miscelleanous objects...) it was good (at first) but then became...annoying?

There is newspapers absolutely everywhere! My shelves, table...My friends think I've gone mad or weird!

















I used an old A3 sketchbook to trace the cards. I thought it was easier than having separate pieces of paper, which probably would have gone missing eventually.











At first I used to spread out the clippings onto the floor but it became too much having to put it all back away again.











For the remaining of the cards, I started photocopying clippings onto different backgrounds as well as shrinking or enlarging. It is quite a fast method, as it enables you to do loads in a very short of time...should have done since the beginning!







They are (finally) all done now. It has been quite an "interesting" exercise. I struggled trying to find thins in the newspaper. I felt looking through them was the longest thing to do. What I liked most about it is when I started photocopying clippings as well as sometimes object.
I suppose, when generating ideas, that is something that needs to be done on a regular basis to help create things.

Impressions on first week @ LCC

Yep, just about survived it...only half-day to go...but that won't be too bad. Although, the last class is Image workshop, which will be fine but the project due on Monday 7th December 2009 is quite big. That reminds me of something I did last year for my NC Graphic Design course. The scale of it was much much smaller though.

I think this year will be very interesting as well as challenging. I'll have to make use of the resources available @ LCC. Have a feeling I'll need a lot of organisation and work hard (of course - that is not a walk in the park!)

Have met and talked to a few people; everybody seems very nice. It's great to see so many people from different background. As there are a lot of people in that course and we are all split into groups as well as am & pm sessions means that eventually will get to know everybody on it.

Had VCT yesterday, was good, quite fast paced though. Talked about a lot of things. I am glad I have kept my research from last year on conceptual studies (research of past designers/artist and their work), that'll definitely come handy this year but it is also a good stepping stone for me to carry on (in my spare time...!) with further research.

I think I'll like having a blog, it's like keeping a diary, the only thing is diaries are meant to be private, so I'm not sure how I feel about the fact that anyone can read through it. I'm sure though re-reading myself in a few months will make me laugh if nothing else.
